Facts About Hunter Valley
The Hunter Valley is located in New South Wales to the north of Sydney in Australia. This place is amongst the biggest river valleys located on the NSW coast. The north and the south regions of the hunter valley are joined by the Hunter River which actually gives Hunter Valley its name.
The Hunter valley comprises of 3 distinct areas which include the Upper and the Lower Hunter and the Broke Fordwich. Most of the Hunter vineyards of the lower hunter valley region are situated below the Brokenback Mountain. The temperatures are quite high during the summers, and a majority of the wet spells here occur between the month of January and April. The days can get humid or hot at times. The lower Hunter Valley is wet as compared to the other two regions and also enjoys the cold sea breezes.
Hunter valley has three main types of soils; the red clay loam which is found on top of the hills or slopes and in the hunter valley it is mostly found in the Lower areas and in some upper areas. These are well-drained and useful for growing the best Shiraz. On some slopes of the hunter valley you will find the chocolate brown coloured pod sols. The third major type of soil is on the flats. These are mainly along the creek beds.
Hunter valley is a well known place for its picturesque natural beauty, a number of wineries which produce world class quality wines and the coal industry. The wineries were established here in the 1800s. This was when Australia’s very first commercial vineyard was started here.
